Unit is not accepting coins

  • If other changers are available, swap the acceptor first
  • If issue still exists, swap the whole changer to confirm that the problem is the changer and not the main control board
  • Attempt to tune the changer (see pg. B.1, Users Guide). **Units newer than the 47th week of 2000 cannot be tuned.
  • Replace the acceptor.
  • Call technical support

Coin-op will not accept bills

  • Just specific bills or all bills?
    • Specific bills - Check the age of the unit and try both old and new bills. It may need to be upgraded with new RLA chip to accept new bills.
All bills - 1st - Check the LED on the bill acceptor. Is it lit or blinking? If it is not lit, check the coins stored in memory. They have to total at least $5.00 with all coins represented. Loading coins If it is flashing then 2nd - Check the lights on the front to make sure there is power to the bill acceptor. 3rd - Check the harness to make sure it is OK. 4th - Remove the bill stacker; if full, take out bill and retry. 5th - remove the lower housing of the bill acceptor to check the bill path for debris or trapped bills. 6th - perform a JP11 Reset and re-enter the coins in memory. 7th - If another unit is available, exchange the bill acceptors to confirm that it is the problem. 8th - If one is not available, call technical support at (800) 990-2234.

Coin-op will only take bills in half way, and then it either holds it or gives it back

  • Possible cause:
    • communication between the main board and the bill acceptor. Check the LED on the bill acceptor. If it is blinking, call and refer to the problem sheet for the acceptor located on the top of the bill acceptor. If this doesn't solve the problem, call technical support at (800) 990-2234.

Unit will not decrement (Technician required)

  • First understand that it can either be the control device, the harness, or the copier. The most prominent cause on an older installation is the harness. On a newer installation, it is the set up off the jumpers or the copier service modes.
    • Confirm jumper settings for that specific copier.
    • Disconnect control device from copier.
    • Test copier enable circuit and check for appropriate voltages on the copier pulse circuit.
    • Put our unit in test mode (if it is a Minolta Pro or Xerox, then it should be that way already). Go to the end of the control device harness (it should be disconnected from copier). With value in the control device short the red and green wire together momentarily. It should reduce the value every time you do this. If it does not, then go directly to the control device board and short the pins associated with the red and green wires together. If it works at the board, then the harness is the problem. Repair or replace the harness. If it does not work, then JP11 Reset, and try again. If it still does not work, then replace the board. If the control device tests okay, then short the copier control circuit and see if the copier is providing a pulse for each sheet. Somewhere in this process you will discover the problem.

Coin-op will not give change (NOTE: Unit will not give change if balance remaining exceeds the vend required amount unless the coin return plunger is pressed)

  • May be a decrement issue.
    • Check the coin count in memory using the service mode.
    • If coins are sufficient, press coin return lever on the changer, inside the coin box (located on top part of changer)
    • Check to make sure it is decrementing. It will not give change if it does not decrement and is set to force vend.
    • Turn bypass on and off. Insert coins and make copies. Manually depress lever on the changer itself to see if it gives change. If it does, then the metal lever will have to be adjusted. If it does not, then Manually check the changer harness to make sure the wires are set into the connector completely.
    • If another changer is available, exchange and see if the changer is the problem. If not, then JP11 Reset and test. If still not working, Unit will have to be serviced; call technical support at (800) 990-2234.

Display does not show all characters (e.g. "Insert C")

  • Possible cause:
    • power surge. Press the top service button on the main board until the display reads "SCRLNS", press the bottom button and an "Equals 1" will be displayed. Press the top button to exit out. If necessary, call technical support at (800) 990-2234 for a possible JP11 Reset.

Unit will not enable the copier (coin-op) (Technician required)

  • Possible cause: Problem is usually the harness in older installations.
    • Turn bypass key on and off and see if there is any change in the enable status either way. If there is a change (meaning that the copier comes ready with the bypass key. That means the enable circuit is intact. It also means that the copier foreign interface function is on), then check to be sure that the copy price is set properly. If it is, then JP11 Reset, and test. If it still does not work, then replace the board.
    • If the bypass key does not bring copier ready, then disconnect coin-op from copier and place meter in continuity mode and check between the black and white wires for a change in continuity at the end of the harness and on the main control board of the coin-op. If there is continuity at the board and not at the end of the harness, then the harness is the problem. Repair or replace.
    • If there is not continuity at the board, then JP11 Reset and test.
    • Repair or replace board.

Unit will not disable the copier (coin-op) (Technician required)

  • Possible cause: Problem is usually the harness in older installations and setup in newer installations.
    • Turn bypass key on and off and see if there is any change in the enable status either way. If there is (meaning that the copier comes ready with the bypass key. That means the enable circuit is intact. Also means that the copier foreign interface function is on) then check to be sure that the unit is decrementing by inserting a coin and making copies. If it is not, then refer to "Unit not Decrementing" section. If it is, then JP11 Reset and test. If it still does not work, then replace the board.
    • If there is no change in the enable status with the bypass key, then
    • Disconnect the coin-op and see if the copier stays ready. If it does, check the copier foreign interface function. It is probably not on or configured improperly.
    • If the copier does not stay ready when disconnected from coin-op, disconnect coin-op from copier. Place meter in continuity mode and check between the black and white wires for a change in continuity. Do this at the end of the harness and on the main control board of the coin-op with both money and bypass. If there is a continuity change at the board and not the end of the harness, then the harness is the problem. Repair or replace.
    • If there is not a continuity change at the board, then JP11 Reset and test.
    • Repair or replace board.

Unit rejects all coins, but the bypass key works.

  • Check the dipswitches behind the acceptor head and make sure the amount per copy is turned on. Also make sure that dipswitch #10 is turned on.
  • Coin Return Plunger may not be operating properly.
  • Check the coin return plunger for full travel.
  • Try resetting coin-op by powering down and powering back up.
  • Call Technical Support at (800) 990-2234.

Display reads "Format Error"

  • Possible Cause: Settings have been changed on the programmer or on the card reader itself. Generally, the SITE, ROM, or STX has been changed to cause a format error. The programmer must match the card reader.
    • Insert the super card; continue sliding the card in and out until the display reads SITE, ROM or STX.
    • Verify that these codes match the codes inside the programmer. (Press enter on the KPE until the display reads SITE, ROM or STX)
    • If a code does not match, press the button on the front to increase the number or press the button on the back to decrease the number.

Display reads "Verify Error"

  • Possible Cause: Card strip is unclean or damaged, or the read/write head needs to be cleaned.
    • Clean the card by swiping against pant leg or shirt, and then re-insert it into the reader.
    • If "Verify Error" is still displayed, try cleaning the read/write head inside the card reader. (Cleaning cards are sent with all new orders)
    • Call Technical Support at (800) 990-2234.

  • Typically this is due to one of two problems. Either the user has inadvertently reset the "Run Limit" or the "Machine Limit" or the copy machine really has reached its limit
    • Reset both of the mentioned limits. Enter your supervisor code to enter supervisor mode. Once in, push the #7, this is the Run limit. Press the enter button to accept this amount. (NOTE: If you push the enter button without changing the limit, it will default to zero. This will give you a run limit error. If you do not wish to change the limit, press "clear" to escape.) Once you have reset the Run limit, reenter the supervisor mode and press the #8. This is the "Machine Run Limit". Then press the "Enter" button. Then enter the desired limit (max is 65000). Then press the "Enter" button. (NOTE: If you push the enter button without changing the limit, it will default to zero. This will give you a machine copy limit error. If you do not wish to change the limit, press "clear" to escape). The next message will ask you to zero copy count; if you do not wish to do so, then press clear to exit out and test machine. (NOTE: If the unit has reached its limit you will need to zero the copy count. You will want to do a meter reading before you do this.)
    • If this does not fix the problem, then you will have to reset the system. (NOTE: This will blank all your accounts and they will have to be re-entered.) To reset the system, enter your supervisor code to enter the supervisor mode. Then press #9. This is system-reset mode. Press the enter button to accept this option. Then the unit asks you to press the "#" button to reset the system. Press the "clear" button to abort. (WARNING: Pressing the "#" button will delete all accounts.) The unit will have to be sent to the shop if it still does not function. Call Technical Support at (800) 990-2234, for a Return Authorization Number
**NOTE: Please clear copy count data monthly to prevent limit errors.

The card reader will not accept cards

The Price will only set in whole dollar amounts

Cannot access card reader service mode from general service mode

  • These are typically evidence that the main board and the card reader board have lost communication.
    • Power down the 3180.
    • Unplug the 2-wire power harness between card reader and main board.
    • Unplug the 3-wire communication harness between the main board and the card reader. Be sure note the position before removing. Wait 30 seconds.
    • Reconnect both harnesses and power up the 3180 and test.
    • Confirm position of communication harness. If it still will not work, then JP11 Reset the main board. If this does not establish communication, the unit will have to be serviced in the shop. Call Technical Support for a Return Authorization Number (800) 990-2234.

Cards get stuck in the card dispenser when they dispense (Reads "Out of Service Call Maintenance")

  • Check to make sure the card path is aligned. Some of the units were off and need to have the stainless guides bent. Some of the cards get stuck together from the ink. Just fan the cards before loading.

Cards continue to feed out of the dispenser after the dispense button is depressed

  • Typically, it will feed 4 groups of 4, and then 2, and then shut off. This usually means that the feed sensor on the dispenser is not working or is out of alignment. It can happen if someone tries to force a card back into the dispense slot. Check the sensor just to the right side of the card path, below the card path. The metal plate on the lower front of the dispenser may have to be removed to access this switch. Usually, the switch can be wiggled or the plugs checked and it will work fine. If it still does not work, call Technical support at
    (800) 990-2234 for a Return Authorization Number.

Numbers pressed on keypad do not appear on the screen

  • Possible cause: Cable harness is damaged. Try straightening the harness (Check for possible pinching of the wire between the metal chassis and the transport mechanism) Call Technical Support for additional troubleshooting,
    (800) 990-2234.

How do I tune the changer?

  • Remove power from the coin-op
  • Remove the coin acceptor from the changer
  • Remove the water shield covering the Main Control Board in the changer housing
  • On the Main Control Board you will see a 2-pin header in the upper right corner. Jumper this 2-pin header, plug the ribbon cable of the acceptor back on and put acceptor in place.
  • Power the coin-op up (you will have no display at this time).
  • Insert 16 nickels, 16 dimes, and 16 quarters into changer through the coin insert slot
  • Once this has been completed, remove power, remove the acceptor and remove the jumper.
  • After jumper has been removed, replace the acceptor and power up the coin-op. (Do not install water shield.)
  • Test unit for operation. Sometimes the changers require tuning twice.

**Note: You must use 16 different coins when tuning or the unit may still reject a percentage of coins. Remember to turn switch on (located behind the acceptor) to the "on" position if you wish to accept Canadian coins.

How do I load the coin tubes?

  • Insert coins from the front of the changer (see page B.6 in appendix B - Coinco Changer, notice the arrow heads about halfway down the changer - these slots are used to direct load coins) counting each coin. The payout of coins can only be as accurate as the coin count that you give the control board. Using this quick load method requires that you accurately count all coins inserted.
  • Enter the service mode, and press the service button until "View Usage?" is displayed
  • Press the selection button to select this option, then press until "NKLS Stored" appears
  • NKLS - Stored 000 will appear - press the selection button until the proper count appears (turn on the bypass key to lower the count). Press the serviced button to go to the next display.
  • DIMES - Stored 000 will appear - store the proper number of dimes as described above.
  • QTRS - Stored 000 will appear - store the proper number of quarters as described above.
  • "Exit? Bottom" will display - press the bottom switch to exit the service mode.

JP11 Reset

  • **Make sure to get your meter reading before resetting
    • Power unit down
    • Remove Jumper from JP1 and place it on JP11
    • Power unit up
      • Display will read Press top switch - then press top switch
      • Display will read Failed Test #2 - Then press top switch
      • Display reads "OK" and goes blank
    • Power unit down
    • Remove Jumper from JP11 and place it back on JP1 (very important that it goes back on JP1 where you removed it)
  • **NOTE: JP11 resets the coin counts to zero. After performing JP11 Reset, the coin count must be entered back in the system either by going through the service mode or by entering the coins through the top and turning the bypass key on and off when you are finished.
